Programme

This is an ongoing programme for anyone who is interested in expanding their artistic horizons through visits to our demonstrations and workshops, exhibitions and talks. It is not limited to Downland members.  If this is something you are interested in and would like a copy of the current programme, please let us know via our contact form.

This Year's Programme is looking great starting with Catherine Beale demonstrating a “Fisherman’s  Hut” in watercolour in her unique style on 3rdJanuary, right through to the December AGM. Keep your eyes on the list as it is updated and you will see lots of different and interesting Demos, workshops and En Plein Air days in the summer too. Any Members wishing to suggest venues for En Plein Air, speak to a member of the committee or use the contact form.

Catherine Beale - a Fisherman’s Hut - watercolour demonstration

Cathrine uses the subtle light of the atmospheric British weather to inspire her watercolours using the  method she has developed over the years. Come and see the wonderful demonstration and see if that inspires you to try her techniques.

Marieta Sotirova - Demonstration - Portrait in Oils

Marietta is a  Plein Air and  Studio oil painter, she approaches her subjects with a fresh and contemporary style. Her biggest inspiration is the ever-changing light and atmosphere.

Come and watch her at work on the 7th February, And maybe follow it up with the workshop on the 11th!

Roger Dellar -Demonstration - Marine Scene in Oils

Roger is a well known and impressive artist with many skills you will be fascinated by his techniques and ease of use of the oils. An engaging, interesting speaker while he works, he never disappoints us.

This will be a well attended workshop so make sure you don’t miss out! Visitors are welcome in the final fortnight before it occurs.

Roger is a very good teacher who really engages with the participants. Always a pleasure to work with him!

Sue Cooper - Demonstration - Animal Portraits, Watercolour

Sue is a Sussex Artist based at Pagham. Her animal portraits seem to capture the essence of the subject, it will be a very interesting Demo to watch with our new camera and projection Screen we can really see the work happening even at the back of the room.

Hilary Frame - Workshop - creating your own sketchbook.

Hilary is a super teacher with an engaging manner. She also happens to be our  chairperson at present and an artist of considerable experience.

We would love more people to enter the sketchbook award later in the year and this workshop demonstration is going to kickstart us all, so join in.

Spring Critique Session

-

All members are invited to bring their framed or mounted pictures for the critique day at Walberton Pavilion. It will be judged by  visiting artist, Elisabetta Coccia. It will be a lively and interesting afternoon. Don’t be shy, bring your work along and see what interesting things the artist has to say about it. There will be awards given for each category.  The categories are as follows:-

Dorothy Tubb Award - For the best traditionally painted oil painting.

Contemporary Award - for the best contemporary painting any medium.

Drawing Award - for the best  drawing  in any drawing medium.

There will be two highly commended for each category.

Julie King - Demonstration - Hare in Watercolour

My career as a Printed Textile Designer in industry has been a strong influence on my work and I often see my paintings emerge with a decorative and colourful element to them. Julie will demonstrate her way of using Watercolour to describe Hares on a loose background.

Steve Carroll - Demonstration - Textures in Acrylics

Steve Carroll started life as a graphic artist after leaving college and has gravitated to Art History and painting. He has  awards for his paintings.

He teaches Art, Art History, and lectures sometimes for the  Art Society.

Steve will share his methods of texturing with Acrylics, it promises to be a great day. With lots of fun and information. Steve’s knowledge of art is extensive.

Based at Worthing, Steve is a well known local artist, with a huge breadth of knowledge in the History of art and art. He is always interesting to listen to. He also gives talks for the "Art Society" in venues around the region and runs an art History group at Durrington.

Autumn Critique Session

Tom Groom Award - for a painting themed “The Beach” in any medium.

Dominic Carlton Sketchbook Award - for the best Sketchbook presented.

Elaine Almond - Workshop - Abstraction in mixed media

Expressive abstract art that sparks deep emotional connections come have fun and experiment with Elaine. 

She writes an expressive love of colour and abstract forms in nature and the world around. "I paint from what my eyes see, and my heart and spirit feel."

Kate Tugwell - Demonstration - Kingfisher in watercolour Demo

With a background in graphic design, Kate specialises in people and pet portraits and also runs her own art courses.

Christmas party, and Awards AGM

Come and join us for our final meeting before Christmas we promised nibbles and fizz and lots of lovely conversation with our friends, preceded  by the AGM and Awards presentations.
