Ann Winterbotham
Ann is a painter, teacher and retired illustrator. She studied at Chelsea School of Art and the Royal College of Art in the 1960s, gaining an MA. She comments “it was a good time to be in the Kings Road - in some ways!”
Having worked as an illustrator since college, she is now concentrating on painting for pleasure and trying to help others do the same.
Strong colours and shapes appeal to Ann, and she aims to combine realism with an abstract feel for composition and design.
She feels the Impressionists had a point when they said ‘art should reflect the real world’. So the complex shapes of our small-scale industrial or working landscapes are catching her eye this summer. Sometimes, she takes these colours and shapes into abstracts with watercolour, which she finds very exciting to do.
For rural landscapes or gardens, Ann is more likely to use acrylics, because of the freedom of handling they provide. She likes to apply layers to vary the effect, and comments that after doing a lot of detailed painting of gardens in watercolour for publications, the painterly feel of acrylics is a real pleasure.
Sometimes, Ann can’t bear to sell a painting, so inexpensive prints by a local printer have been a popular solution. The printer also produces calendars of Ann’s local scenes, which keep her family and friends up to date.
